Troy Mayor Supports Restoration of Additional Sales Tax

Troy Mayor Roy Maness is among the signers of yesterday’s open letter in support of Governor Bev Perdue’s proposal to reverse a budgetary decision made by the State General Assembly. The move would temporarily restore a fraction of a penny sales tax that the General Assembly let expire, and would devote all of that revenue to education.

In their letter, the mayors wrote, “The legislature’s budget has hurt education at all levels, from Pre-K all the way through higher education, and has led to higher class sizes and the loss of teachers and teaching assistant positions right here in our local schools.”

The mayors also said that companies who inquire about moving to or expanding in the county often ask about the education of the potential workforce.

Roy Maness joined 52 other mayors from across the state in signing the open letter. Click here to see the complete document.
