Details Emerge in Badin Lake Drowning

We now know more about the boating accident that last week claimed the life of Bill Bowles of Ellerbe. According to reports from the North Carolina Department of Wildlife, Bowles was in a boat near Palmerville Beach on Badin Lake last Tuesday afternoon when he stood up, causing the boat to capsize.

Bowles was accompanied by William White of Troy, who stayed with the overturned boat while Bowles attempted to swim about a hundred yards to shore. White said Bowles became unresponsive partway across, and, when White swam to check on him, found him deceased and pulled him to shore.

Wildlife Officer David Ritzheimer told media that it was his understanding that Bowles’ death would be ruled a drowning.

Bill Bowles was 66 years old and had a number of ties to the Montgomery County area. His funeral was held Friday.
