School Health Centers Open Today

Ribbon-cutting ceremonies today mark the official opening of the new FirstHealth Montgomery County School Health Centers at East and West Middle Schools.

Family Nurse Practitioner Gina Smith says, “the Centers provide both acute and preventive care regardless of the ability to pay” and, in many cases, offer an alternative to an emergency room visit.

A spokesperson for FirstHealth says that services are available to all students in Montgomery County Public Schools, and that 78% of the children served through the centers are either uninsured or covered by Medicaid or NC Health Choice. The new centers include telehealth and videoconferencing technology, and they were constructed with help from a grant of nearly $500,000 from the federal Health Resources and Services Administration.
