A memorial service will be held this evening for former West Montgomery High School teacher and coach James Garmon.
Garmon, who died Thursday after a period of declining health, is remembered as a teacher of history and drivers education, and also as the coach of the highly-successful Warriors varsity football team of the late 1960s, 70s and 80s. In 22 seasons at West, Garmon compiled a winning average of nearly 78% overall, and more than 86% in conference play. Under Garmon’s leadership, the team won 12 conference championships and was a state finalist in 1975.
The memorial service is set for 6:00 p.m. today in the West Montgomery High School Auditorium. The family requests that any memorial gifts be made to the donor of one’s choice, or to the newly-established James Garmon Scholarship Fund at West.
