In a little more than two weeks, Mount Gilead’s elected officials and staff will meet in an effort to clarify their respective authority and duties.
The meeting will be led by Rob Shepherd of the North Carolina League of Municipalities, who said the meeting “will include, but not be limited to, the legal authority of the mayor, the legal authority of the commissioners, the legal authority of the manager, clerk and the role of the attorney”. Shepherd also said that he and the League of Municipalities are approaching the meeting “as an opportunity to share information…based on..good operating principles and to encourage and foster good relationships between..municipal elected official and appointed staff to do the jobs (each has) been elected or appointed to do”, which he says “is to serve (the) community and to provide the best possible government for..citizens and businesses”.
The meeting was originally scheduled for mid-January, but was postponed because of the prospect of bad weather. It is open to the public and will be held Mon., Feb. 18, at 7:00 p.m. at the Mount Gilead Library. WMTG plans to cover the meeting and air a delayed broadcast.
Many had hoped this could happen before another regular meeting of Town Commissioners, but the February Commissioners meeting is set for the 12th. We reported that the Jan. 15 commissioners meeting “was tinged with misunderstanding and frustration”, and the Montgomery Herald called it an outright “disaster”.
