In a Facebook post to customers and friends, owner Jerry Smith said, “The TV business has changed drastically over the past few years, and most of the profitability (is) gone.”

Smith recalled that, when he opened the business in 1975, “The average … TV sold for $900.00 and a new work van sold for $4,400.00.” Smith says, “Now, a nice TV sells for $500.00, and a work van sells for $40,000.00.”

Some time ago, Jerry’s TV also began selling and installing internet service as a dealer for Ellerbe Telephone. The wireless service has been popular, especially in areas not well-served by traditional wired internet, and Smith will continue that work from his home.

Smith’s brother, Tommy, had also worked in the shop and plans to do some work on his own.
