Town Creek Indian Mound will host “Astronomy Day” and “Town Creek Under the Stars” this Sat., Apr. 20.
The daytime event, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., will include observation of the sun using a 12-inch Dobsonian telescope fitted with solar filters. Handouts and other educational materials will explain various aspects of astronomy and guide visitors to safe viewing of the sun’s surface. Guests will also learn about the Aurora Borealis, also known as the Northern Lights.
After the sun sets, the State Historic Site will be open from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. for “Town Creek Under the Stars”, and the telescope will again be available for viewing.
Karen Bowles of Town Creek said, “Saturn will be making its closest approach to the Earth, so this will be one of the best times to view the planet this year.”
Both Astronomy Day and Town Creek Under the Stars are free and open to the public. Registration is requested for the nighttime event. More information is available at 910-439-6802 or online at http://www.towncreekindianmound.com.
