Sat., May 25, 8:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.
The Town of Biscoe is hosting the Mayor’s Fun Run, the Dash ’n’ Splash 8K, and a festival of music, food, vendors and games today at Deaton-Monroe Park on Mill St. Running events are this morning, and the festival activities go on into early evening. The Sand Band will play at 1:00 p.m., and Blue Horizon will perform at 3:00 p.m. Click here to see the full schedule.

Sat., May 25, 11:00 a.m.
In Mount Gilead, the VFW and American Legion will present their annual program at the veterans monument next to the library on W. Allenton St. It begins at 11:00 a.m. this morning, and WMTG will rebroadcast it Sunday at 7:30 a.m.

Sat., May 25, 1:00 – 6:00 p.m.
Sun., May 26, 1:00 – 6:00 p.m.
Mon., May 27, 1:00 – 5:00 p.m.
The Mount Gilead pool kicks off the 2013 season this weekend. Admission is $2 per person. Weekday hours will begin after school is out. Swimming lessons and water aerobics are also planned to start in June. Details at 910-439-5111.

Sat., May 25, 6:00 p.m.
Tonight, there’s Christian music with Second Chance and Defenders of the Cross at the Cedar Plantation on N. Main St. in Troy. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. for the family-friendly event.

Sat., May 25, 7:30 p.m.
Also tonight, the Mount Gilead Music Barn will host a new bluegrass group. The Edwards Family Band will take the stage at 7:30 p.m. at the Music Barn on N. Main St. in Mount Gilead.

Sun., May 26, 2:00 p.m.
The Montgomery Veterans Council will host a Memorial Day observance Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. on the courthouse lawn in Troy. From U.S. Congressman Larry Kissell and others will speak.

Tue., May 28, 8:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
Fri., May 31, 3:00 – 7:00 p.m.
In the week ahead, the American Red Cross blood drive will visit the county twice. The bloodmobile will be at West Montgomery High School Tuesday from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and then at WesCare in Troy Friday from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. Appointments are not necessary, but may be made by phone at 1-800-RED-CROSS.

Wed., May 29, 9:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Senior Games will be held Wednesday at the Montgomery Senior Center. Activities are open to seniors age 55 and up and their spouses, and the day’s events will start at 9:30 a.m. at the center on Page St. in Troy. For more information, call 910-572-4464.

Thu., May 30, 3:30 – 6:30 p.m.
The Montgomery County Farmers Market offers fresh, local vegetables and meats, along with home-baked and hand-made items, and there are food demonstrations and other activities from week to week. The market is open Thursdays from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. on N. Main St. next to the old hotel in Troy.

Fri., May 31, 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.
Sat., Jun. 1, 8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
Next Friday evening, bluegrass music and food will kick off the Star Heritage Day festival. It starts Friday evening at 6:00 p.m. at the Star Community Kitchen, and continues will a full day of activities beginning at 8:00 a.m. Saturday. More information at 910-428-4623 or

Sat., Jun. 1, 6:00 a.m. – until
Also next Saturday, the Pekin Volunteer Fire Department will host a community breakfast. It starts June 1st at 6:00 a.m. at the Pekin Fire Department. There is no set charge, but donations will be accepted.

Remember, banks, post offices and most government offices will be closed Monday for the Memorial Day holiday. Montgomery County Schools are closed Monday, and the public library is closed today through Monday. Emergency services continue uninterrupted and can be accessed by calling 911.

Town Creek Indian Mound is open today, but will be closed tomorrow and Monday. The North Carolina Zoo at Asheboro is open today, tomorrow and Monday. Zoo officials say expect large crowds and make contingency plans if you’re meeting friends and family at the zoo.
