Reports say 26-year-old Matthew Callahan of Rockingham drowned in the early evening Mon., May 27. Witnesses were quoted as saying the young man was attempting to swim across a cove at the public boating access area near Lilesville.

Anson County Sheriff Tommy Allen told the Anson Record the drowning appeared to be accidental, and he said his office would wait for results from the Medical Examiner before completing the investigation.

One person was said to have tried to swim out and help the struggling victim, but couldn’t reach him in time. It took rescue workers about four hours to find him.

The area where Callahan drowned is said to be known as a swimming and partying spot for people from Anson and Richmond Counties.
