The Courier-Tribune says 28-year-old Jose Luis Palencia turned himself in and was charged by the Randolph County Sheriff with misdemeanor violation of a state law requiring storage of firearms to protect minors.

A report at the time of the accident said the 2-year-old found an unsecured handgun in his parents’ bedroom and shot himself in the face. Palencia took the child to the Randolph Hospital in Asheboro, where doctors transferred him to Brenner Children’s Hospital in Winston-Salem for surgery on his jawbone.
