Here are some items of interest coming up this weekend and next week…

– Town Creek Indian Mound will celebrate the birthday of archaeologist Joffre Coe during tomorrow’s “2nd Saturdays” event. Coe oversaw much of the early excavation and interpretation of the Town Creek State Historic Site east of Mount Gilead, and he also worked at the Hardaway site near Badin. Special exhibits and activities will be offered through the day tomorrow, and birthday cake will be served at 1:00 p.m. Artists and vendors will also be participating. – The “Art for Kids” camp starts Mon., July 15, in Mount Gilead. Registration will be done on-site starting Monday at 9:00 a.m., and the camp will run from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon each day next week. An open house will cap off the week Friday afternoon. The free camp is being hosted by the Mount Gilead Art Guild, and information is available at 910-439-4715.

– There will be bluegrass music from the band “Deeper Shade of Blue” Sat. night, July 13, at the Mount Gilead Music Barn on N. Main St.. The show will start at 7:30 p.m..

– One week from tomorrow, it’s the North Carolina Peach Festival, Sat., July 20 in Candor. The weekend will begin with the Peachy Feet 5K and fun run Fri. night, July 19. Information is available from Candor Town Hall at 910-974-4221 or online at
