Mount Gilead Town Commissioners are making plans to learn more about the rules of open meetings.
At their meeting Tue., Sept. 10, commissioners set a tentative date to meet and become more familiar with North Carolina’s open meetings laws, sometimes called “sunshine laws”.
The purpose of the laws is to provide a framework within which meetings of governmental bodies are conducted with uniform transparency and full disclosure to the public and press.
Commissioners have each received a copy of a book on the subject, and the meeting has been tentatively scheduled for Sat., Sept. 28, at 9 a.m. at the Mount Gilead Public Library. The public will be welcome to observe the session.
Earlier this year, Rob Shepherd of the League of Municipalities presented a workshop for commissioners in which they learned more about the roles and responsibilities of various offices within town administration.
