Local residents are still reporting incidents of possible telephone fraud.
On Monday, we reported that some local folks had received calls and text messages saying family members had been kidnapped or injured. According to information from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, at least one caller instructed a person to bring $1,300 in cash to the hospital in Troy.
Now, some area residents say they have been receiving other calls, some promising free gifts and large coupon packages.
In the earlier cases, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and police departments in Troy and Biscoe investigated the calls and found no family members in danger.
Officers continue to remind citizens to protect their personal information and to use other means to verify that family members are safe. They are also asking that anyone receiving calls like this to keep the caller on the line, if possible, and use a second phone to call 911 for help.
