Brooks due in court Oct. 3 on murder charge

A former Montgomery County detention officer will return to court early next month in Pitt County, where he is accused of the murder of his infant son in July.

130923_Pitt_County_Sheriff_logo28-year-old Jonathan Dewayne Brooks was arrested Wed., Sept. 18, and charged with murder after the Pitt County medical examiner concluded the child’s fatal head injury was not accidental.

Family, friends and others have posted a wide range of comments on Facebook and other social media, though it will be some time before evidence is presented at trial. Some of the comments are in defense of Brooks, saying he could not have committed such a crime, while others condemn the young man and call for harsh punishment.

Jonathan Brooks is a 2004 graduate of West Montgomery High School, and, according to the state Attorney General’s Office, he was a detention officer with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office from November 2010 to January 2012.

A source told WMTG Thursday that Brooks moved to his fiancee’s home of Pitt County when she took a job there.

As of this morning, Brooks remained in the Pitt County Detention Center under a $2 million bond. He is scheduled to appear in court Oct. 3.
