Fire department barbecue, 5k big successes in Mount Gilead

The Mount Gilead Fire Department held its second annual “Smokin’ Pig” 5K Saturday. About 150 runners participated in the 5K.

The fastest runners were Jeremy Burr and Owen Whitesell, who took first and second place male overall at 20 min. 16 sec. Tyler Hunsucker was the third place male finisher. The top three female runners overall were Haley Davis at 24 min., followed by Catelin Delaney and Kasey Britt.

The fire department also had its 24th annual fall barbecue Saturday. Fire Chief Keith Byrd said the meal was a big success, and the squad sold out around 5 p.m., nearly two hours before the scheduled closing time. Byrd expressed appreciation to all who patronized the barbecue and participated in the 5K.

Both events are expected to be held again next October.
