Local high school football fans are gearing up for tomorrow night’s state 1AA semifinal contest between West Montgomery and Swain County.
It’s a match-up that reminds many of the playoff contest that ended West’s post-season play in 2011. That time, the game was on the Maroon Devil’s home field in Bryson City, but this time, the Warriors will host the contest, with the winner advancing to the state championship game next weekend.
The semifinals also serve as the regional championships, with West and Swain playing for the Western Regional title. In the Eastern Region, James Kenan High School is hosting Wallace-Rose Hill Friday night.
Here at home, West Montgomery head coach Nick Eddins says he expects a tough contest tomorrow night, but that his team is up for the challenge.
“(Our players) have been more businesslike,” Eddins said, “more focused and matured, in a sense, and they’re tuned in to what the game plan is going to be. (There are) very few mistakes out there at practice. They get to the meetings and they focus in, and that’s a good thing, especially this time of year.”
Local folks are calling on the community to show support for the West Montgomery team by displaying the school colors – red, black and white – and by wearing all-black clothing to the game.
Complete coverage of the game will start Fri., Dec. 6, at 7 p.m. on WMTG at 88.1 FM in and near Mount Gilead, online at http://www.wmtg.org, and with the TuneIn mobile app.
