West Montgomery’s varsity football team will play tonight in the semifinals of the state 1AA championship series. Their opponents are the Maroon Devils of Swain County High School, which has filled a chartered bus full of fans to come to tonight’s game.
Going into tonight’s game, West head coach Nick Eddins says there has been ample opportunity for the teams to study each other, and the key to a victory lies in successfully carrying out the plays that the team has been practicing.
“At this point in time, you know what they’re going to do, (and) they know what you’re going to do,” said Eddins. “It’s a matter of executing and teaching the kids, (and) how they’re going to react to it… Just executing the things that are taught.”
Coach Eddins says his players are focused, and while they may think about the possibility of playing in next week’s championship game, it remains important to keep their minds on this week’s game.
“Maybe they can see the light at the end of the tunnel. We talk about winning the state championship, and we’re right here, but we’ve got to take care of it one at a time.”
The winner of tonight’s contest will be the State 1AA Western Regional Champion and will face the winner of tonight’s James Kenan vs. Wallace-Rose Hill contest in next weekend’s state championship game.
Kick off is set for 7:30 tonight for the game at James Garmon Field at West Montgomery High School.
