At an informal meeting the morning of Jan. 28, hospital officials told employees the last day of child deliveries at Richmond Memorial will be Feb. 28, and that the hospital’s delivery services would be transferred to FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

Hospital officials cited declines in both the local birth rate and the number of women of child-bearing age as factors in their decision.

FirstHealth discontinued child delivery at Montgomery Memorial Hospital in Troy several years ago and also transferred those services to the main campus in Pinehurst, where there is a 13-bed neonatal intensive care unit and more focus on specialized care for mothers and newborns.

The department closing in Rockingham will affect 23 full-time and five part-time employees, some of whom may be reassigned, asked to take on new duties, or offered a severance package.
