The North Carolina Zoo will kick off a season of celebration this weekend as it begins the observance of the zoo’s 40th anniversary. This weekend, special events will include the opening of two new exhibits: “Bugs: An Epic Adventure” and the newly-renovated “kidZone”.
The “Bugs” exhibit features a gallery of animatronic creatures, from the bumblebee and grasshopper to scorpion and dragonfly, and a tarantula measuring nearly 30 feet across. A bio-dome staffed by education presenters will feature a variety of live invertebrates from around the world.
The “kidZone” reopens following more tha two years and $1 million in renovations. kidZone is designed to help connect children to nature, and it offers a stream, a rope bridge treetop experience, stone maze, live animal presentations and other educational programs especially for children.
Other presentations and performances will be featured throughout the park, with schedules posted at zoo entrances. The anniversary kickoff event will take place this weekend, and the feature exhibits will remain available throughout the year.
The zoo will begin its summer hours this weekend: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week. More information about the North Carolina Zoo is available at http://www.nczoo.org, or by phone at 1-800-488-0444.
