Mount Gilead Town Commissioners are expected to have a called meeting tonight (Apr. 28) to discuss a personnel matter.
The meeting follows the resignation of police chief Cleve Willoughby, who stepped down last Tuesday amid the controversy of a traffic stop the previous week in Cabarrus County. Willoughby was reported to have been driving a town-owned vehicle after drinking what was said to have been “a couple of beers” with dinner. Published reports say Mount Gilead Police Officer James Lewellen was with Willoughby at the time.
It is our continued understanding that Lewellan remains on the job, and that assistant chief Pam Smith is covering the duties of chief for now.
WMTG was informed that tonight’s meeting of town commissioners would start at 6 p.m., though other reports say the meeting will be at 7. Our attempts to confirm the time and place of the meeting have been unsuccessful.
