Town Creek Indian Mound will host a pine needle basket workshop entitled “A Stitch in Pine”, this Sat., May 3, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Town Creek Historic Interpreter Karen Bowles said, “Longleaf Pine grows throughout the South and produces long needles that would have provided a great material for American Indians in the Southeast to create … beautiful coiled baskets.”
Bowles said participants in this Saturday’s workshop will have an opportunity to learn the coiling technique used to make pine needle baskets and take home the supplies and skills necessary to complete their own baskets.
Staff at the State Historic Site near Mount Gilead recommend the workshop for ages 13 and up. There is a small participation fee, and pre-registration is required. For more information, call 910-439-6802, stop by the site, or visit http://www.towncreekindianmound.com.
