Richmond County teen drowns at Blewett Falls

Family and friends are mourning the loss of a Richmond County teenager who drowned Saturday in the Pee Dee River.

The Richmond Daily Journal reports that 17-year-old Jaquan Bailey and two friends were fishing at Blewett Falls Lake when they decided to swim to a nearby concrete platform. Bailey had difficulty and called out to his friends, one of whom reached the teenager, but was unable to save him.

The friend told the paper he swam to Bailey because he was closer, but could not free the panicked swimmer from the spot they were in.

Bailey was a student athlete at Richmond Senior High School, were students gathered yesterday morning to remember him.

At last check, no funeral plans had been announced for Jaquan Bailey, who turned 17 on May 24.

Duke Energy Progress owns the Blewett Falls Hydroelectric Plant, the next power-generating facility downstream from the Tillery Plant on the Pee Dee River.
