Charlotte teen drowns in Montgomery County

A Charlotte teenager drowned Sat., Jun. 21, in Montgomery County.

North Carolina Wildlife confirmed to news media that 18-year-old Richard Edward Maxwell III was with a group of teenage friends jumping off a cliff and swimming in Tuckertown Lake. The report said the friends were holding onto a floating log when they spotted a snake. Maxwell was said to have panicked, letting go of the log, slipping under water and never resurfacing.

The friends called 911, and it was about an hour and a half before Maxwell’s body was recovered.
