Mount Gilead area residents gathered last night for the National Night Out.
The annual event is sponsored by the Mount Gilead Concerned Citizens and Community Watch and local law enforcement in an effort to raise awareness of crime prevention and to strengthen police-community relationships.
By invitation of the Concerned Citizens group, Richmond County Sheriff James Clemmons was the keynote speaker.
One attendee reported that Clemmons called on “neighbors, parents, police, business and (the) town council to work together to take charge and shape the future of the community.”
Local law enforcement officials were also given an opportunity to speak.
This was the eighth year for the local observance of the National Night Out, which has been organized for 31 years by the National Association of Town Watch.
