One suspect dead, another hospitalized following Mount Gilead robbery

At last check, the surviving suspect of a Wednesday robbery in Mount Gilead remained hospitalized in Chapel Hill.

140114_Police_Lights_Abstract25-year-old Reid Jacob Spell of Burlington survived the crash that killed 30-year-old Noah Donovan Sheffield, a native of Star who was living in Ellerbe.

The pair were fleeing authorities after the robbery of C & R Drug when their car ran off McCallum Road and hit a tree. Both men were ejected, and Sheffield was pronounced dead at the scene.

Law enforcement told media that the robbery occurred around 4 p.m. Wednesday, when two men wearing ski masks entered C & R Drug and directed pharmacist Jim Haithcock to fill a trash bag with prescription painkillers. Reports say the suspects fled on foot after receiving the medication, then led officers on a high-speed chase that ended in the accident.

Officers from the Mount Gilead Police and Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office pursued the vehicle through Pekin before the crash.

A source told WMTG that Noah Sheffield was a single parent of two children.
