71-year-old Kit Vanderwal was the owner of Lantern Hill Pottery on Brewer Rd., just off Dover Rd., about four-and-a-half miles northeast of Star. He lived adjacent to the shop and also operated a retail store in Seagrove.

The Moore County Sheriff’s Office is investigating and told media Vanderwal’s death was a homicide, and the fire was arson. The case remains open, and no suspect has been named.

Kit Vanderwal’s work included functional pottery like dinner and ovenware, plus folk art including jugs that featured faces.

Anyone with information on the crime is encouraged to contact local law enforcement or the Moore County Sheriff’s Tip Line at 910-947-4444.
