West Montgomery High School’s Class of 1962 will formally present a new gift to its alma mater in a ceremony set for this weekend.
The gift is a sculpture by Johnpaul Harris, the renowned artist who has created statues of Charlie “Choo-Choo” Justice at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, “Mildred the Bear” at Grandfather Mountain, the “White Rhino” at the North Carolina Zoo, and many commissioned pieces throughout the United States and Europe.
It’s a bit of a ‘homecoming’ work for Harris, himself a 1963 graduate of West Montgomery.
Alumna Cheryl Hall said the sculpture is situated adjacent to the Jordan Athletic Building, where the public dedication ceremony will take place Sat., Sep. 27, at 10 a.m.
Hall said the class is “very fortunate to be able to present a gift of this caliber to the school.”
A spokesperson for West Montgomery said the sculpture “can be used as a touchstone as players head to the football field.”
