One student is hospitalized and another is in custody following a shooting this morning at Albemarle High School on Park Ridge Road.
In a press conference this morning, Albemarle Police Chief William Halliburton said the call came in around 7:40 a.m. Preliminary information says the shooting happened outside the main entrance of the school.
Chief Halliburton said the alleged shooter dropped the handgun, stayed on the scene, and surrendered to police without further incident.
Halliburton said the shooting may have been the result of a single dispute between the two male students at Albemarle. Officers are interviewing other students, and they believe there may be some witnesses to the incident.
One reporter at the press conference said she had been told the victim was shot in the leg, but the police chief did not confirm the location or extent of the injury. The victim was said to have been transported to Stanly Regional Medical Center, though it wasn’t immediately clear if he had been transferred elsewhere.
A staging area was set up at nearby North Albemarle Baptist Church to facilitate the dismissal of students to their parents.
