Tonight marks the end of regular season play in Yadkin Valley 1A Conference high school football, and West Montgomery carries a 7-0 conference record into tonight’s contest versus East Montgomery. East is 4-3 in conference play this fall.
West head coach Nick Eddins says the cross-county rivalry generates a lot of excitement for the students and fans.
“It’s a lot of fun, there’ll be a lot of folks here,” says Eddins. “Our kids will be jazzed up for it, their kids will be jazzed up for it, and there’ll be a good, hard-hitting, clean football game.”
The coach says he has spoken with his players about the scuffle that resulted in player ejections in the East Montgomery-North Moore game last week, and the kind of pre-game exchanges that often take place online.
“We do talk to the kids about it, not to get involved in all that,” Eddins said, “because, when it comes down to it, the words don’t mean anything. It’s the actions on the field. How you execute, how you play behind your pads and behind that helmet is what’s going to decide the game. Talking on Facebook or any of that stuff don’t make no difference — don’t make no difference in the world.”
Kickoff is set for tonight at 7:30 p.m. at West, and WMTG’s coverage starts just after 7 p.m. on the air at 88.1 FM in Mount Gilead, online at http://www.wmtg.org, and with the TuneIn mobile app. John and Jonathan Inman will have play-by-play and analysis.
Tonight is senior recognition night at West, and Communities in Schools will also host a visit from the Rockin’ Rollin’ Video Game Trailer, a luxury game theater with seven high-definition screens, surround sound and multiplayer gaming. Play will be available from 6:30 to 9:30, and money raised will help support the Tree of Hope, a Christmas assistance program that provides holiday gifts for underprivileged children age newborn through fifth grade.
