West Montgomery to face Walkertown tonight in playoffs

West Montgomery’s varsity football team will play tonight in round two of the state 1AA playoffs.

141121_West_vs_WalkertownWest is 11-1 overall so far this season, and tonight they’ll face Walkertown, which has a 9-2 season record and last week defeated North Stanly 55-9 to advance to round two of the playoffs.

West head coach Nick Eddins believes his team is ready for the contest, and he said an aggressive defense will continue to play a key role in his team’s strategy.

“Everybody that’s seen us play knows what our philosophy is,” Eddins said. “We’re going to be very aggressive on defense. If (the quarterback) is going to throw it, he’d better throw it fast.”

Walkertown is a young school with a building program, and will likely be classified in the larger 2A category in the next realignment by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association.

Walkertown coach Mike Springston told the Winston-Salem Journal tonight’s game versus West is, without question, “the biggest game” his team will ever have played.

Nick Eddins said tonight’s matchup should provide some excitement for fans.

“It should be a great ball game,” said Eddins. “If we come out and execute and do what we’re supposed to do, it should be one heck of a game.”

WMTG’s coverage of West Montgomery football starts at 7 p.m. It can be heard at 88.1 FM in Mount Gilead, online at http://www.wmtg.org, and with the TuneIn mobile app.
