West Montgomery to host Starmount tonight

The state 1AA high school football playoffs continue, and West Montgomery will host Starmount tonight. West coach Nick Eddins said the Starmount team relies heavily on a running game, with only 11 pass completions all season, but has a playbook that reflects the teams strengths.

141125_West_Starmount_Small“They’re very impressive on offense,” said Eddins. “They’re good at what they do, and they’re very impressive on defense. They play exactly like they’re supposed to play.”

The 10-3 Starmount team will face a strong West Montgomery squad, which brings a 12-1 season record into tonight’s contest. Coach Eddins said the game should be exciting for fans.

“A chess match, if you will,” Eddins said, “cat-and-mouse game, whatever you want to call it. It’s going to be a lot of fun playing against a fundamental, well-coached team, as Starmount is.”

The winner of tonight’s game will advance to next week’s semi-final round, facing the winner of the Whiteville vs. Swain County contest.

Prior to the football game, the West Montgomery boys basketball program will have a red-white scrimmage game at 5:30 p.m. in the school gym. There is no admission charge, but donations will be accepted for the school’s Angel Tree project, helping children in need this Christmas.

Tonight’s kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m., and John and Jonathan Inman will have WMTG’s broadcast coverage starting at 7 p.m. at 88.1 FM in Mount Gilead, online at http://www.wmtg.org, and with the TuneIn mobile app.
