Moore County man dies in Pekin Road accident

Authorities say charges are pending in an accident that claimed the life of a Moore County man Friday between Troy and Pekin.

Sources say 77-year-old Richard Dale Muhlig of West End was driving his pickup truck south on Pekin Rd. (SR 1005) around 5:35 p.m. Fri., Dec. 12, when he met a tractor pulling a combine wider than its travel lane. The Chevrolet Canyon collided with the combine and came to rest in the edge of a cornfield.

Muhlig was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, but did not survive his injuries.

A passenger in the vehicle, Muhlig’s adult grandson, was said to have opened the passenger door and jumped from the moving truck just before impact. The grandson was said to have been “mobile and alert” at the scene, with no signs of serious injury.

It was too close to being dark for the tractor to be hauling an implement that was wider than the its road side. Tragic.
