Funeral services are scheduled tonight for Jimmy Harold Poplin, the victim of an accident involving a log truck Friday near Mount Gilead.
Authorities told media the 81-year-old Poplin was checking his roadside mailbox on Hwy. 109 about 2 miles south of town when he stepped into the path of a log truck that had already partially passed him. Poplin was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, but did not survive his injuries.
Investigating Trooper Gary Beaman of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol told the Courier-Tribune the accident was “unavoidable”, saying the victim “turned around and walked right into the side of the truck.”
A source told WMTG Poplin was hard of hearing.
The fully-loaded log truck was driven by Randy Allan Chappell of Mount Gilead. Chappell was not hurt and does not face charges as a result of the accident.
