Mount Gilead’s “One Community” initiative is planning a downtown cleanup this weekend.
The cleanup is being coordinated through One Community’s “Instilling Pride” committee, and organizers are hoping to pick up a lot of trash and other debris in an effort to start improving the overall appearance of the town. The committee has discussed the possibility of developing an adopt-a-street program, similar to the highway cleanup program operated by the state Department of Transportation.
Mount Gilead Town Commissioners voted March 10 to give the committee $2,000 previously earmarked for downtown facade improvements to help facilitate the committee’s plan to work with business owners to freshen up the appearance of several vacant properties.
One Community works under the auspices of Mount Gilead’s Economic Development Council, and the Instilling Pride Committee is led by co-chairs Kenna Feis and Florence Leake. Volunteers wanting to participate can contact Feis at 910-439-5600. The committee also has a public Facebook page called “Mount Gilead Pride”.
