FireFest this weekend at STARworks

STARworks will host its annual FireFest event Apr. 3-4. The popular festival celebrates the role of fire in the creation of art, using glass, metal and clay.

150331-FireFest-CompositeExperts will offer demonstrations and lectures, and workshops will be available for those interested in studying a particular medium.

Featured glass artists are the De La Torre Brothers, and ceramic artist Carol Gentithes has been invited to create a clay sculpture. Liberty Arts Non-Profit Foundry & Sculpture Studio of Durham will conduct an iron pour.

All guest artists will hold slide shows and participate in finale events involving fire.

FireFest will start Fri., Apr. 3, at 1 p.m., and continue at 10 a.m. Sat., Apr. 4. There will be live music both evenings, and the event will culminate with the firing of the final piece Saturday from 8:30 to 10 p.m. There is an admission fee, and more information is available at 910-428-9001 or online at

The National Endowment for the Arts last year granted $10,000 to support this year’s FireFest.
