Many students in Anson County are wearing purple today (Mar. 31) to remember Shaundasia Smith, the 16-year-old granddaughter of Anson Sheriff Landric Reid. Reports say Smith died Sunday evening following a gunshot wound to her head around 3 a.m. Sunday, while at a sleepover on Jim Hanna Lane, off Hwy. 109 south of Wadesboro.

The SBI is investigating the case, and local media said authorities on Mar. 30 arrested Roger Lee Rorie, who is charged with involuntary manslaughter. Rorie is also accused of supplying alcohol to minors and with obstruction of justice after trying to hide a rifle that is suspected of firing the fatal shot.

Due to the relationship between the victim and the sheriff, Rorie was placed in the Stanly County Jail in Albemarle.
