The Mount Gilead Police Department is closer to resuming full responsibility for law enforcement in the town. Mount Gilead has contracted with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office for coverage following the departure of former chief Ralph Vieux in April.

In June, the town hired Pat Preslar as the interim chief. He is a native resident of Hamlet whose background includes experience with the Hamlet Police Department and North Carolina Alcohol Law Enforcement.

Now, five additional officers have been hired, and they were sworn in for service at the Aug. 11, 2015, meeting of town commissioners. They are Lieutenant Jimmy Wells, Detective Sergeant Jody Majors, and officers Charles Warner, Chris Lee and Daniel Schober.

Chief Preslar thanked citizens for their “support and patience” during what he called a period of “reorganization” in the department. He also expressed his appreciation to Sheriff Chris Watkins and deputies for providing law enforcement coverage over the past several months.
