Early voting to begin Oct. 22 in municipal elections

130705_Vote_ButtonOne-stop early voting will begin Thu., Oct. 22 for this fall’s municipal elections. Voters across North Carolina will be electing council representatives, mayors and other officials.

In Mount Gilead, a new mayor will be elected to replace retiring mayor Earl Poplin. Voters will choose between Brooke Crump and Chip Miller.

Brooke Crump is a member of the class of 2014 at Charlotte School of Law and a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she received a B.A. in Political Science and Communications. She teaches language arts and social studies at West Middle School and  has worked in the Montgomery County District Attorney’s office.

Chip Miller is a 1973 graduate of N.C. State University and has been with Jordan Lumber and its associated companies since 1981.

Mount Gilead residents will also elect two town commissioners. Commissioners Paula Covington and Vera Richardson have both filed to run for reelection. They are being challenged by former mayor Patty Almond and by Mitch Taylor, who worked with BB&T before become finance director for Montgomery County Schools.

According to county elections director Donna Johnson, the one-stop early voting will take place in the Board of Elections office in the courthouse in Troy. Hours are as follows:

Oct. 22 & 23, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Oct. 26-30, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Oct. 31, 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Though we have not received confirmation, curbside voting is typically available during the one-stop voting period for those who are physically challenged. More information is available from the Montgomery County Board of Elections office at 910-572-2024.

A new state requirement that voters present photo identification at polling places does not take effect until Jan. 1, 2016 and does not apply to this election.

Election day is Tue., Nov. 3. WMTG will provide live results that night on the air and on its home page at http://www.wmtg.org.
